Why coatings lose adhesion in industrial production.

Substrate condition, batter viscosity, pickup, process temperature and hold conditions can all influence coating performance.

Adhesion is built before the coating is applied

Surface moisture, temperature and any residual free water on the substrate determine how the batter behaves on contact. Two batches of the same product can coat differently if the substrate arrives in a different condition.

Pre-dust selection, substrate temperature and dwell before application are therefore part of the coating system, not preliminaries to it.

Where industrial conditions diverge from trials

Batter viscosity drifts as solids, temperature and water pickup change through a run. Pickup rates vary with line speed. Hold time between coating and thermal treatment changes how much moisture migrates into the coating layer.

Troubleshooting is most effective when these are measured through a run rather than assessed on a single sample.

  • Control substrate condition before adjusting the coating.
  • Monitor batter viscosity and pickup through the run, not once.
  • Treat hold time between coating and cooking as a process variable.
